Washington County Lottery player couldn’t believe his eyes when he saw a $50,000 prize on his scratch-off.
A Western Maryland man is the latest to win a top prize on the $50,000 Cash scratch-off game. It was a Lottery banner that brought him into Hub City Liquors in Hagerstown last week, and it was a $50,000 winning ticket that brought him to Lottery headquarters on May 15.
“I would have gone right by the store,” the Sharpsburg resident told Lottery officials. “But, that sign caught my attention.” He’s referring to a banner that Hub City Liquors posted to celebrate a big Lottery win at the store. It looks like they’ll have to make room for one more.
$50,000 Cash is unique among scratch-off games. When it debuted in December 2022, the ticket offered 160 top prizes. This Washington County top-prize win is the game’s 96th.
Our winner, who goes by “Shady Grady,” tells us that his hands were shaking when he passed the ticket to his wife. “I didn’t trust what I was seeing,” he said. Her confirmation that the ticket did indeed show a $50,000 match kicked off several hours of celebration. “It was joy, of course, but also nerves. And lots and lots of laughter.”
The Sharpsburg family will save and invest their $50,000 Cash winnings.
Hub City Liquors isn’t new to selling large winning tickets. In 2023, a “Happy Dog Groomer” purchased a $2 million Cash is King winning ticket. That same year, a Washington County Couple claimed a $100,000 Ultimate Cash winning ticket from the store.
Hub City Liquors is located at 1063 Maryland Avenue in Hagerstown. The store will receive a $500 bonus from the Lottery for selling the $50,000 top-prize winning ticket.
