Sad Powerball Player Delighted with $50,000 Scratch-off Prize

Hagerstown man claims second-tier prize in $500,000 Crossword scratch-off game

Although he didn’t win the top prize on the $500,000 Crossword scratch-off, a western Maryland Lottery player is still stoked over his $50,000 score on the $20 instant ticket.

Winner Ronald Mueller of Hagerstown is a dedicated Lottery player who enjoys a variety of games. Some of his favorites are the $1 Million Royale instant ticket, crossword-themed scratch-offs like the $500,000 Crossword game and Powerball. Now that one of his games of choice delivered his biggest win, Ronald can’t stop singing its praises.

The 39-year-old told Lottery officials he experienced an emotional roller coaster as he went from sadness and disappointment over the outcome of a recent Powerball drawing to joy at winning big with a scratch-off. Ronald visited The Corner Pub located at 158 South Mulberry Street in Hagerstown and bought $80 worth of Powerball tickets in the hope of winning the ever-rolling jackpot. When the drawing came and went without giving him any win, the disappointed player took an extra $20 he had in his pocket and bought a $500,000 Crossword scratch-off. As he played the game and won a $50,000 prize, his disappointment quickly turned into disbelief and then excitement and joy.

“I stood there for a minute with my jaw on the floor because I don’t have that type of luck,” Ronald said. He isn’t sure yet what he will do with his new fortune.

The $500,000 Crossword game debuted in September 2019 and still has two of its original eight top prizes available. This is the last $50,000 prize. Three $10,000 prizes remain, along with others ranging from $20 to $1,000.
