Scratch-off Selection Routine Gives Bowie Man a $100,000 Win

Finds top prize on Hot 7s Multiplier game

A loyal player from Bowie plays lots of Maryland Lottery games, from Cash4Life to Powerball to the Pick 3/4/5 games. When it comes to scratch-offs, he follows a routine that just gave him a $100,000 top prize. The Prince George’s County man picks scratch-off games based on whether the number appearing on the scratch-off display bin matches a family members’ birth date.

A lifelong player, the winner’s biggest prize to date was $500. “I’ve been playing 40 years,” he said with a smile, noting that he wins small amounts but never anything with six figures.  “I’m just so grateful.”

The building engineer and his partner were headed to a church to work on a project when he suggested they stop “to play our numbers” before arriving at their destination. His lucky Lottery retailer that day was Valero gas station at 5601 Martin Luther King Junior Highway in Capitol Heights.

In addition to buying his draw and jackpot games, the lucky player picked a Hot 7s Multiplier instant ticket out of bin #23, which corresponded to a family birthday. He scratched off the prize check area on the $10 game and used the Maryland Lottery app on his phone to check for a win. To this day, only he and his partner know that Lottery luck came his way.

Right after discovering the win, they went to the church and completed the project. The happy dad plans to use his windfall to pay bills and will share some of the prize with the church.

Sharing in his Lottery luck is the Prince George’s County retailer. For selling a $100,000 top-prize winning scratch-off, Valero receives a $1,000 bonus from the Lottery.

The Hot 7s Multiplier is a member of a family of “Hot” games that went on sale in May. The game still has five top prizes remaining, along with 24 $10,000 prizes and others ranging from $10 to $1,000. Other scratch-offs in the “Hot” family of games are the $1 Hot 7s, $2 Hot 7s Doubler, $3 Red Hot Cash, $5 Hot 7s Tripler and a $20 Hot 777 scratch-off that went on sale in April.
