Silver Spring Man Sews Up $50,800 Bonus Match 5 Win

A Silver Spring resident got quite the surprise while checking his Lottery numbers at home when he discovered he was holding a winning $50,800 Bonus Match 5 ticket.

The retired Nordstrom tailoring department employee is a longtime Maryland Lottery player who enjoys playing Bonus Match 5.

For the May 7 drawing, he purchased his ticket at Colesville Beer & Wine located at 13468 New Hampshire Avenue in Silver Spring.

Several days later, while checking numbers on the Maryland Lottery app, the Montgomery County man noticed that a winning ticket had been sold at the same location where he bought his tickets. After comparing the numbers to his ticket, the clues quickly added up. He matched all five numbers and won the $50,000 top prize. He also matched some numbers on other lines on the same ticket for an additional $800.

He immediately shared the exciting news with his wife.

“It’s about time,” the winner recalled her saying after hearing the news.

He traveled to Lottery headquarters on May 13 to claim his prize. He was accompanied by his daughter who he led to believe she was simply driving him to a doctor’s appointment. He surprised her when arrived at the Montgomery Park building.

“I couldn’t believe it,” she said. “I’m still in shock.”

The Silver Spring man said he plans to use his winnings to pay some bills and enjoy a vacation with his wife.

Colesville Beer & Wine also has reason to celebrate. They will receive a $500 bonus for selling the top-tier Bonus Match 5 winning ticket.
