An Anne Arundel County woman is having an extended birthday celebration, thanks to a Bonus Match 5 win from the drawing on May 18. Her son, who buys tickets for his mother, waited until her birthday in June to give her the good news about a $50,030 win.
The big winner’s son purchased the winning ticket for his mother in May. She picked some random numbers for Bonus Match 5 and the Pick 3 and Pick 4 games, and sent her son to the Giant in Glen Burnie to pick up her tickets. When speaking to Lottery officials on July 7 after she claimed the prize, she said the numbers she played just came to her.
“The numbers just felt right,” she said.
The winner’s son held on to the tickets after he purchased them, and was shocked when he checked them the next day. Turns out his mother matched the five numbers drawn that evening for a $50,000 win. In addition, an extra $30 was won because she matched three numbers on two other lines for $15 each. The player’s son immediately got a wonderful idea on how to share this good news with his mother.
“I sat there looking at that ticket and knew right away I was going to surprise her on her birthday in June,” he said when he accompanied his mother to claim the prize.
The thoughtful son put a note inside a birthday card, that read, “You won $50,000” and gave it to his mother on the morning of her birthday. She was shocked when she opened the card.
“I tried to keep calm, because of health reasons, but I was so excited,” she chuckled. “I didn’t want to do cartwheels and stuff.”
Calling her son the “ticket keeper and security guard” she had him hold on to the winning ticket while she made arrangements to claim the prize. The retired retail associate said she plans to use the winnings to purchase a new car.
