A Hagerstown woman has been sitting on a pretty big secret, a jackpot-sized secret, since April 10. It was then that all six of her Multi-Match numbers matched the numbers drawn, delivering her an $870,000 surprise. The winner chose the $510,000 cash option.
“I play when I’m in a store that sells tickets and I have few spare dollars in my pocket,” she told Lottery officials.
The Western Maryland woman happened to get $4 among her change when she finished her grocery shopping at Martins in Hagerstown.
It was a notification on a news app that clued her in. “It said that Martins had sold a jackpot winner. It reminded me that I’d bought a ticket there.” Then, she checked her ticket on the Lottery app, and that changed what had been a quiet, ordinary Thursday into one she’ll never forget.
“I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. All this time later, it still hasn’t really registered. My mind has been going at full speed for two months now.”
The Hagerstown resident texted a family member about the big win soon after it happened. That relative, who accompanied our winner to Lottery headquarters on June 9, shared with us that he had never received a text with so many exclamation points.
Investments, possibly including a new house, are on her list for the future. And, she plans to keep buying Lottery tickets, especially from Martins at 1670 Wesel Road. The Washington County business received a $1,000 bonus for selling the winning jackpot ticket.
