Visa Lottery Inspires Severn Resident to Play Powerball, Bringing $50,000 Win

A life-changing experience with a different kind of lottery ended up bringing a man to Maryland six years ago. He then started playing the Maryland Lottery, leading to a $50,000 third-tier Powerball Double Play win in the Sept. 20 drawing.

That lottery was when he was applying for a visa to emigrate to the U.S. through that lottery system. His luck with the visa lottery made him optimistic about winning big in the Powerball or Mega Millions drawings, so ever since settling in Severn, he has set aside a few dollars to play those games.

Powerball tickets are $2, with drawings held Monday, Wednesday and Saturday nights. Powerball Double Play is a separate drawing held 30 minutes after each Powerball drawing. Players can add the Double Play option to their Powerball ticket for an additional $1, making their $3 ticket eligible for both the Powerball drawing and the Double Play drawing.

For the Sept. 20 drawing, he purchased a single quick pick ticket with the Double Play option. He didn’t win anything in the main Powerball drawing, however on the subsequent Double Play drawing, he matched four of the first five white balls drawn plus the red Powerball for his third-tier $50,000 win.

The Severn player says if he wins a major jackpot, he would support programs designed to advance children and young people.

He bought the winning Powerball Double Play ticket at the Royal Farms store at 7910 Shipley Homestead Drive in Hanover.
