Carroll County Man Hits $1 Million Prize on 100X the Cash Scratch-Off

A Carroll County man who has spent more than 50 years working as an iron worker has no plans to slow down, and a $1 million 100X the Cash scratch-off win gives him another reason to keep moving.

“It keeps me active,” the winner said.

The regular scratch-off player stopped at the Sheetz at 3281 Main Street in Manchester, a store where he frequently buys his lottery tickets. He purchased a $20 100X the Cash scratch-off from the vending machine, but there was a snag: The machine jammed.

After getting assistance to retrieve his ticket, the Manchester resident learned he had purchased the very last one in the machine.

He scanned the ticket’s barcode and saw a message telling him to “Go to Lottery.” Knowing that meant he had won something, he decided to scratch the rest of the ticket to find out how much.

When he revealed a 100X symbol over a $10,000 prize, he initially thought he had won $10,000.

Then, the math kicked in.

“The math in my head went right away,” he said. “It’s a million dollars.”

Still wanting confirmation, he scanned the ticket using the My Lottery Rewards app and then had it scanned at the store’s counter. Both scans confirmed what he had already suspected. He had won $1 million.

He took the winning ticket home to show his wife. At first, she was unimpressed because she didn’t know the amount of the prize and handed the ticket back to him.

He told her to look again.

That’s when she grabbed a calculator and realized her husband had just won $1 million.

The winner hasn’t made any concrete plans for his prize yet, but he has a few ideas. He would like to use some of his winnings to help support his grandchildren, who are in college, and make improvements to his home.

For now, however, he is taking a wait-and-see approach.

“We ain’t counting our chickens until they hatch,” he said. “Not until we cash it.”

The Carroll County resident claimed his prize at Maryland Lottery headquarters on Aug. 12.

For selling the $1 million-winning scratch-off, Sheetz will receive a $1,000 bonus from the Maryland Lottery.

The $20 100X the Cash game went on sale in January with seven top prizes. There is one $1 million top prize remaining.
