All the Dundalk woman wanted when she walked into the Wawa store was a cup of coffee. She says she’s not much of a Lottery player, but a Powerball jackpot sign in the store got her attention. Not as much attention, however, as the $50,000 prize she ended up winning.
“I buy tickets maybe twice a month,” the industrial worker said Aug. 12 after claiming her third-tier prize at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore. “But when I saw that jackpot up over $500 million, I said to myself, ‘Why not take a shot?’”
She bought the ticket on the afternoon of Aug. 8 for the drawing on the evening of Aug. 9, but remained unaware of her good fortune until days later when she visited a lottery retailer near her home.
“The message on the scanner said to see the cashier. I wasn’t sure what that could mean,” she said. A few moments after getting that cryptic message, she asked a clerk for help and he handed her a print-out of her prize amount: $50,000.
“It was impossible to believe. Just impossible,” she said.
The winner said she plans to share her winnings with family and her favorite charities. She hinted she may be adding some upgrades to an already-planned trip.
She bought the $50,000 ticket at the Wawa convenience store at 4901 Boston Street in Baltimore.
The Powerball jackpot that piqued the Baltimore County winner’s interest continues to climb. It stands at $526 million for the Aug. 13 drawing.
