Dad Repays $10 Owed to Son with Scratch-off Worth $100,000

James Maus Jr. of Hagerstown is planning to buy a new home after claiming a $100,000 scratch-off prize.

Hagerstown son plans to buy home for himself and parents with top-prize win

Taking his parents to the grocery store is routine for James Maus Jr. of Hagerstown, who also didn’t think twice about loaning his dad $10 and telling him that he could pay it back on the first of the month.

When June 1 rolled around, James accepted his dad’s offer of a new $10 Show Me $100,000! scratch-off instead of the cash. The 39-year-old lives with and cares for his parents, who are unable to work due to medical disabilities. With the scratch-off in hand, James headed out the door to commute to his nightshift assembly job in Shippensburg, Pa.

The Washington County resident arrived early for his shift, so he stayed in the car to scratch off the ticket. When he discovered the top-prize win, James began loudly celebrating while still in the driver’s seat. “Luckily, there was no one around because I was acting like a fool,” he said, smiling. “My car was bouncing all over the place.”

He shared the great news with his supervisor, his girlfriend and his parents, but said his dad misunderstood the size of the prize. “He thinks I only won $10,000,” James said. His dad suggested he use the prize toward the down payment on a new house and James plans to do just that. He also plans to share the home with his parents and, maybe one day, with a wife and children of his own.

Also sharing in the big win is the Lottery retailer that sold his dad the lucky scratch-off. Weis Markets #081 located at 31 Eastern Boulevard in Hagerstown will receive a $1,000 bonus from the Lottery for selling a $100,000 top-prize winning scratch-off.

Lucky James found the first of seven $100,000 top prizes on the $10 instant ticket, which is a member of the Show Me family of scratch-off games. The $1, $2, $5 and $10 instant tickets went on sale May 23 and the $20 scratch-off on April 18. Players can choose from a $1 Show Me $1,000! game, a $2 Show Me $10,000! game, a $5 Show Me $50,000! scratch-off and a $20 Show Me $1,000,000! instant ticket.
