Gaithersburg Player Picks Up $50K Powerball Prize as Jackpot Grows to $950M

Powerball continues to roll along since there was no jackpot winner in last night’s drawing (Aug. 28). One player in Gaithersburg, however, was able to get in on the action and grabbed a $50,000 third-tier prize.

The winning numbers for the Aug. 27 drawing are: 9, 12, 22, 41 and 61; the Powerball is 25. The winner matched four of the first five balls plus the Powerball for the $50,000 prize.

The winning Maryland ticket was sold at the Safeway grocery store at 20211 Goshen Road in Gaithersburg. There were second-tier winners in Arizona, New York and Virginia, giving those players $1 million prizes, but no one was able to match all five balls with the Powerball.

The Powerball jackpot increased to an estimated annuity value of $950 million with an estimated cash option of $428.9 million for the Saturday, Aug. 30, drawing. This is the sixth largest jackpot since Powerball was established in April of 1992. The jackpot was last hit May 31 for $204.5 million.

Since the last roll, Maryland has had two second-tier prize winners and the Gaithersburg player is the 11th third-tier winner of the run. There is an unclaimed $100,000 ticket from Oxon Hill and an unclaimed $50,000 winner from Mechanicsville.

Powerball tickets are sold in 45 states, along with Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Both the Powerball and Double Play drawings have nine different prize tiers, with Powerball ranging from $4 up to the jackpot and Double Play ranging from $7 up to $10 million.
