Generous Powerball Fan Brings Home a $50,000 Third-tier Win

Rockville man plans to help a friend in need using winnings

A Montgomery County Lottery fan who exclusively plays Powerball is now reaping the benefits of testing his Lottery luck. The grateful 56-year-old won $50,000 with a quick-pick ticket in the Jan. 30 drawing.

On Jan. 30, the Rockville man stopped at Courthouse Exxon in Rockville specifically to get a Powerball ticket. He paid $10 for five lines of quick-pick numbers and headed home. The information technology specialist didn’t bother watching the drawing that night, but instead made sure to check his ticket the next day during a break from work.

His research revealed that he won $50,000 by matching five white balls and the red Power Ball number. After double-checking his win by googling the winning numbers, the Powerball fan decided to surprise his wife, who had a birthday coming up.

“I texted her that I have some really good news,” said the winner, smiling. “When she came home, I asked had she checked the text messages.”

“I hadn’t because I was driving,” said his wife, who joined her husband in the Lottery Winner’s Circle to celebrate his lucky ticket purchase. “When I met him in the kitchen, he had this huge smile on his face.”

The winner’s wife went to check her phone and then hurried back to the kitchen. That’s when he shared the good news.

“I had no idea he was going to say he won $50,000,” she said, “I’m thinking he’s going to say we are doing something special for my birthday.”

The giving parents of three said the timing of this win is perfect, especially with today’s economy. They plan to save some of the winnings for security reasons but the first thing they will do is to help a friend in need.

“It’s important when you have a financial blessing, to bless someone else,” they both agreed. “We know someone who is really in need right now.”

The happy winner found his Lottery luck at the Courthouse Exxon located at 700 Rockville Pike in Rockville. There were 37 $50,000 winners from around the U.S. in the Jan. 30 drawing, which saw the jackpot continued its roll.

The estimated annuity value for the Saturday, Feb. 4 Powerball drawing is $700 million. The jackpot is the sixth-largest in Powerball history and the 10th largest in U.S. lottery history. The estimated cash option is $375.7 million.
