When he buys his tickets, a Kent County Lottery player said he ponders the question, “What if …” Specifically, he daydreams about what he would do with a life-changing windfall.
When he recently bought a $20 Triple Red 777s scratch-off ticket, he was, of course, hoping for one of the game’s $1 million top prizes. And while he didn’t win one of those, he was still astonished at having hit for a solid $50,000 prize.
“I play for the novelty of it. What if…,” he said June 3 when he claimed the prize at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore.
The construction worker’s usual practice is to buy two tickets about once a week. While his results have varied over the years, he recalled winning a $10,000 prize more than a decade ago.
In this case, he bought two of the Triple Red 777s tickets during an unusual Tuesday breakfast stop at the Wawa convenience store at 101 Hissery Road in Grasonville.
When he scratched the tickets, he recalled noticing something out of the ordinary.
“Wait a minute. There’s too many sevens,” he said. On the Triple Red 777s game, players win the prize noted in each square that contains the numeral 7, and the amount is double if the 7 is red. In this case, the ticket had 7s on 24 of the 30 squares, including a single red 7.
It was that red 7 that caught his eye, as the prize amount in that box was $10,000. When he added the total wins, the full prize came to $50,000.
Though excited about the win, his plans are relatively low key, including paying a few bills and possibly taking a vacation.
The Triple Red 7s family of games went on sale on May 15 and includes five different games ranging from $1 to $20. The $20 Triple Red 777s game has five top prizes of $1 million each, all unclaimed as of June 4. The Kent County winner is the second person to claim one of the game’s six $50,000 prizes to, leaving another four at that level as of June 4, along with tens of thousands of other prizes ranging from $5 to $10,000.
