Anne Arundel County scratch-off players become state’s newest millionaires
He falls to the floor and she screams. Don’t be confused — this is not stage direction for a new horror movie filming in Maryland, but the immediate reactions of a married couple upon realizing that they’d just won $1 million.
Were this from a movie script, the hero of the story would be the Millionaire’s Club scratch-off that delivered what the Anne Arundel County couple describe as a “life-changing” prize. On the other hand, maybe it would be the male lead who bought the top-prize winning instant ticket as his part of a unique family tradition.
“There’s an important day in our lives that we celebrate by buying each other a handful of scratch tickets,” he told Lottery officials. “I added Millionaire’s Club to the tickets I bought for her because of the million-dollar prize.” When all the instant tickets were scratched, the couple scanned each using his Lottery app, which revealed the big prize.
The new millionaires, one a nurse and the other a federal employee, report that the scene in their living room that night was a fun one. “Neither of us could believe it. We were yelling, pacing around the room, bumping into each other, bumping into furniture. It was chaotic.” When they finally caught their breath, they checked and rechecked and scanned and rescanned the $20 scratch-off until all doubt was removed.
The opening scene of this story took place at Wegmans grocery, which is located at 1413 South Main Chapel Way in Gambrills, where he purchased half of the celebratory instant tickets. The Anne Arundel County business has received a $1,000 Lottery bonus for selling the top-prize winning Millionaire’s Club scratch-off.
The instant game hit retailers’ shelves in July of last year. One more of the game’s $1 million top prizes is still in circulation, as well as two $50,000 second-tier winners and six $10,000 winners.
