North Carolina Man and Parkville Mom Each Win $50K on Bonus Match 5

A North Carolina man came to Maryland to visit his mom and ended up buying two Bonus Match 5 tickets that won each of them $50,000.

The two claimed their prizes on consecutive days, Aug. 18 and 19, at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore.

On his way to his mom’s place, he stopped Aug. 4 at Speedy Convenience Store at 7101 Darlington Drive in Parkville specifically to buy the tickets.

“I bought one for me and one for mom,” the lucky winner said, explaining that he filled out two different play slips with the same three number combinations on both, and both for seven drawings in a row, starting with that evening’s drawing.

Though the tickets were good through Aug. 10, that first night was all it took.

The son, a construction worker, searched his phone for the Aug. 4 drawing and saw that he had a perfect match for both tickets.

“I just remained calm and chilled,” he said Aug. 18 at Lottery headquarters.

He had the honor of telling his mom they were both big winners. The Parkville mom said Aug. 19 she also remained calm after she heard the news.

According to the mom, she likes to reuse the same numbers, but can’t recall the significance of the digits.

“I have been playing those numbers for years. I can’t remember how it got started,” she said.

The Baltimore County resident is retired and said she might buy a car, though she’s in no particular hurry.

Her son said he is undecided on how he is going to spend his winnings.
