Prince George’s County Man Wins Top Prize on $50,000 Cash Game

This happy Hyattsville father of two won a $50,000 top prize.

Single scratch-off gives lucky man a $50,000 win

A Hyattsville man who enjoys having a cup of coffee while playing scratch-offs can now afford a better brand of brew. He won $50,000 on a $50,000 Cash scratch-off.

Last Saturday, Jose Hernandez stopped in Ricker’s Beer and Wine in Hyattsville to buy a scratch-off. The 45-year-old chose just one $50,000 Cash game because he had played it before. And, although he had yet to win, he felt lucky enough to try one more time. Jose actually played this game in the store and scratched his way to a $50,000 prize.

“I scanned it and could not believe what I saw,” said Jose. “I was so happy.”

After revealing the prize, the lucky welder left the store and went straight home to share the news with his family. The father of a son and daughter, Jose said he wasn’t sure what to do next, so his son investigated and made an appointment for his dad to claim the $50,000 prize. The two of them visited Lottery headquarters in Baltimore this week.

The Prince George’s County resident said he plans to use some of his prize to take a vacation to his native country of El Salvador and will put the rest in the bank.

The Lottery retailer that sold the winning instant ticket is celebrating, too. Ricker’s Beer and Wine located at 2912 Hamilton Street in Hyattsville will receive a bonus from the Lottery of $500, equal to 1% of the $50,000 prize.

There are 128 more $50,000 top prizes available on the $50,000 Cash game. In December 2022, the game went on sale with 160 top prizes. Also unclaimed are 143 $5,000 prizes and more than 923,000 prizes ranging from $20 to $500.
