Power Play feature doubled his win
Lottery luck was shining bright on a Randallstown man last week when he stopped at his favorite Lottery retailer to buy games on the way to work. He won $100,000 on a ticket he bought for the Oct. 18 Powerball drawing!
The 51-year-old husband and father stops several times a week at the Ellicott City Exxon, which is located at 4235 Montgomery Road, to buy Lottery games. The avid player bought his games that day, including a $6 ticket for that night’s Powerball drawing. He added the Power Play multiplier feature and chose one line of quick-pick numbers and a line of his own numbers. Then, he went on his way.
The network administrator rarely watches drawings or checks his tickets for a win right away. Instead, he places the games in his laptop bag and looks at them later.
“It will be three, four weeks before he checks them,” said the winner’s wife, who accompanied him to Lottery headquarters in Baltimore to claim the prize. “We were out to dinner when I asked him if he had checked the games.” His answer was no, so she made sure to do so when they got home.
One by one, she went through the games from his laptop bag until she got to the Powerball ticket. The wife looked at the numbers first and noticed that her husband’s ticket matched four of the white balls in the Oct. 18 drawing and the red Powerball. Then, she scanned the ticket using the Lottery app and revealed a $100,000 prize. Her husband’s third-tier prize doubled because the Power Play multiplier for the drawing was x2.
“She came running down the stairs, screaming, ‘You won, you won,’ ” said the husband. “I thought she was kidding until we scanned the ticket again and again.”
They plan to use some of the winnings for a trip already planned for their wedding anniversary and will put the rest toward retirement.
Players still have time to get their Powerball tickets for tonight’s drawing. The jackpot for Oct. 27 is $102 million with a cash option of $71.6 million.
