Severna Park Man Turns Spare $30 In His Pocket into $100,000 Windfall

Prize will go for a new car for mom, investment toward house purchase

A casual Maryland Lottery player from Severna Park had an extra $30 in his pocket on Aug. 2, so he bought three $10 scratch-offs and won $100,000 on the second game he scratched.

“I play every now and then when I have a few extra bucks,” he told Lottery officials. “I had $30 and said, ‘Why not?’” The winning instant ticket was on the game Lucky Times 10. “I got a thrill all right,” he said, adding that he couldn’t believe his good fortune. “I scanned that thing like 16 times.”

The first thing he did after realizing he won $100,000 was to tell a friend who lives near him. Then, he called his mom. “She said, ‘Bring it over right now,’” and then the two locked it in a safe place.

The 42-year-old already has plans for his windfall. He will pay down his car loan, buy a new car for his mom and, as he put it, “invest the rest. I’m planning on buying a house in couple of years.”

Also, he plans to organize a celebratory dinner with a few friends.

Sharing in his good fortune is the Citgo gas station at 8355 Ritchie Highway in Pasadena. The Anne Arundel County business picks up a bonus of $1,000, equal to 1% of the prize, from the Lottery for selling a $100,000 top-prize winning scratch-off.

After the latest big win, the game now has two remaining $100,000 top prizes, two $50,000 prizes, seven at the $10,000 level along with more than 173,000 others ranging from $10 to $1,000.
