Harford Mom’s Proxy Powerball Purchase for Busy Daughter Brings $50K Win

A mother and daughter from Harford County are serious when it comes to having fun playing the Maryland Lottery, and that led to one of them picking up a $50,000 third-tier prize in the aftermath of the recent Powerball jackpot roll.

It was the mom who bought the ticket, which matched five of the six numbers drawn in the Sept. 10 Powerball drawing, but that’s because her daughter was at work wanted to be sure she had a ticket.

The two had been paying particularly close attention to the game as the jackpot had reached $1.787 billion before being split by tickets sold in Missouri and Texas in the Sept. 6 drawing. But they continued playing after the monster prize was won and the jackpot reset.

They’re both Lottery fans in general, but they especially enjoy playing when jackpots are high, according to the mom.

After the Sept. 10 drawing, the daughter did not check the ticket her mom had purchased for her right away. A few days later, she asked her mom, more of a Lottery veteran, to check it. That’s when the $50,000 win was revealed.

“We were so excited!” the winner said, adding that while she hasn’t yet figured out plans for her prize money, she intends to keep playing. This, she said, is her first memorable win. Her mom, meanwhile, recalls winning prizes in the $50 to $100 range.

“It’s just fun money,” the mom said.

The mom, daughter and another sibling had a preliminary celebration with dinner at a restaurant in Delaware.

The winning ticket was purchased at All in One at 1327 Policy Drive in Belcamp.
