Lucky feeling leads to five winning Pick 5 tickets
A Prince George’s County man told the Maryland Lottery that he only buys Lottery tickets when “something” tells him to. In the past, that inspiration has usually arrived in a dream, but on March 6, it chose a different route. And it led him to a $250,000 Pick 5 win.
“I was getting some gas at a 7-Eleven in Burtonsville,” the stockbroker explained. “All of a sudden I noticed that my hand was itchy, which got me thinking.”
Aware of the old superstition that connects an itchy hand with a financial windfall, he wondered if it was a sign that he should heed.
“I looked at the store and saw that they sold Lottery tickets — that’s all I needed,” he said.
The Laurel resident said that whenever he buys Lottery tickets, he uses variations of family birthdates, and that whichever combination of numbers he decides to use, he plays it on at least five tickets. “I’ve won enough times that when I get that feeling, I double down,” he said.
In this case, he quintupled down. On the morning of March 6, he bought five $1 straight Pick 5 tickets for that day’s midday and evening drawings with the number 32681.
When he checked that the winning numbers for the March 6 evening drawing, he said he wasn’t completely surprised. His number hit, and each of his five tickets paid a $50,000 prize.
“I sort of expected to win something, but when I saw that all the numbers were there, it hit me like a ton of bricks,” he said. “$250,000 doesn’t drop in your lap every day.”
The Prince George’s County resident said that investments are the first goal he has for his prize. Just as excited about the big win is the 7-Eleven at 15585 Old Columbia Pike in Burtonsville. The Montgomery County business received a $500 bonus for selling each of the Pick 5 tickets — $2,500 in all.
