Montgomery County Player Hits For $50,000 on Bonus Match 5

Hot ticket purchased at Talbert’s Ice & Beverage Service in Bethesda

An anonymous player from Montgomery County scored a $50,000 prize when the Bonus Match 5 numbers were drawn on Jan. 31.

The Chevy Chase resident purchased six draws for $4 and matched the fifth line of personal numbers exactly for the win. Although the Bonus Ball was 7, it didn’t come into play for the win because it only figures into lower-tier prizes.

Part of the game’s bonus is that there’s a discount for buying in bulk. A single combination costs $1 while three combinations cost $2, four cost $3, six cost $4, seven cost $5 and nine cost $6.

The player, a man of few words, confirmed when he claimed the prize at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore that the win helps put retirement a little closer. “It sets me up,” he said. In addition, he plans to give his wife $10,000 of the windfall.

He bought the lucky ticket at Talbert’s Ice & Beverage Service at 5234 River Road in Bethesda. The retailer is one of several locations where the winner makes low-key Lottery purchases. The store receives a bonus of $500, equal to 1% of the prize, from the Lottery for selling the top-prize winning ticket.

This is the fifth top-prize winning Bonus Match 5 ticket sold in 2024. Bonus Match 5 drawings take place seven days a week. Players select five numbers ranging from 1 to 39. The Bonus Ball drawn from the remaining 34 numbers provides extra chances to win. A ticket is a top-tier winner if it matches five of the non-bonus balls. It wins a lower-tier prize if it matches four or three of the five drawn regular numbers, or four, three or two regular numbers plus a match on the Bonus Ball.
