Retired Caregiver Grateful for Lottery Luck

Claims $50,000 Powerball prize in March 2 drawing

“Something always told me that it would happen,” a Prince George’s County woman told Lottery officials, “and it finally did.” Visiting headquarters to claim a $50,000 Powerball prize, the retired occupational therapist explained that she has continued to buy Powerball and Mega Millions tickets for years, in spite of the advice of her family.

The Hyattsville resident follows a particular pattern in her Lottery play. However, for this lucky ticket purchase in the March 2 drawing, she deviated from her routine. “I wanted to change what I usually did,” she said, “so I switched from playing my regular Powerball numbers and bought a quick-pick ticket.” This option has the Lottery terminal pick a player’s numbers randomly.

Waking suddenly at 2 a.m. the next day, the loyal player had a strong feeling that she’d won. Not strong enough, however, to get her out of bed to check. “I had a really good feeling that something good had happened, but I didn’t really believe it.” That opinion changed when she scanned her $2 Powerball ticket later that day. “I thought to myself, ‘Am I dreaming?’”

She was not! The winner was one of 29 players nationwide to match four white balls and the Power Ball for a $50,000 third-tier prize.

“I’m so thankful for this, for the way it eases my worries about so many things,” the woman said. “My family would always talk to me about the terrible odds of winning a big prize and tell me that I was wasting $2 each time I bought a ticket. I knew they were right about the chances of winning, but I believed just as strongly that it would happen. And here I am.”

Our Powerball winner bought her $50,000-winning ticket from a Lottery vending machine at Live! Casino & Hotel, located at 7002 Arundel Mills Circle #7777 in Hanover. She plans to use her winnings for several home repair projects that are long overdue. “Not to have to wonder any more if I’ll ever get them done is such a relief.”

No one hit the Powerball jackpot in last night’s drawing, sending the estimated annuity to $521 million for the Saturday, March 9 drawing. The estimated cash option is $249.6 million.
