A Maryland Lottery player from Prince George’s County already had the nickname “Scratch-off Queen”, but a $100,000 ticket confirmed her good luck charm status.
A Maryland Lottery player from just outside the District in Prince George’s County has long been regarded as a bringer of good luck at Best 1 Food Market in Capitol Heights, and that was before she bought a scratch-off worth $100,000.
“They always rub my shoulder and say, ‘Bring me luck, Scratch-off Queen,’” the player said June 20 when she was at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore to claim her prize from the $10 Gold Rush 7s Multiplier game.
Her nickname at the store came after she won a $5,000 prize on a scratch-off she bought at the store during a previous stint of playing. She’s fond of scratch-offs simply because she enjoys the process of scratching the ticket and revealing the details of the game she’s playing.
“I play scratch-offs more than a number. It’s just fun,” she said.
On the occasion of her $100,000 win, “Scratch-off Queen” had a plan to meet her sister at Best 1 Food Market at 4225 Southern Avenue in Capitol Heights, but her sister was running late. The player decided to buy a single Gold Rush 7s Multiplier ticket, then sat down and set about scratching. Not a winner. She then got in the line with other people buying tickets and when she got to the counter a second time, she bought another Gold Rush 7s Multiplier scratch-off.
“This is how I know I was meant to win,” she said, noting that she ended up waiting in line twice before she ended up with the hot ticket.
When she finished scratching that one, she said, “I was like, ‘Hold up!’” She brought it to the clerk and told him it was a big winner. The clerk suggested she scan it to confirm. Her analysis of the situation on the ticket was spot on: a $100,000 winner.
Her plans for the money are practical. First priority is a new living situation. Then a car. And she wants to make sure there’s money left to invest for the future.
The store where she bought the winning ticket (and also got her Lottery nickname) receives a bonus of $1,000 for selling a top-tier winning scratch-off. The ticket claimed by “Scratch-off Queen” was the sixth of eight at the $100,000 level on the game, leaving two more unclaimed. In addition, the game has 14 prizes remaining at the $10,000 level and tens of thousands of others ranging from $10 to $1,000.
