A Washington County couple were working their way through a grocery list on April 20 when one broke away to visit the store’s Lottery vending machine. While the pair had picked out plenty of quality items there, none of them beat the $50,000 prize delivered by the Powerball ticket they purchased.
“Whenever we go food shopping I stop by the Lottery machine,” the Hagerstown husband said April 22 when the two claimed the prize at Lottery headquarters. He enjoys all of the games the Lottery offers, he said, but Powerball and Mega Millions are his favorites. “Just like everybody else,” the retired medical specialist admitted, “those big jackpots catch my attention.”
When he scanned his $10 Powerball ticket at a different Lottery retailer two days later, he was – to use his word – dumbfounded.
“I just kept checking the ticket over and over. I just could not believe it,” he said. Having won $15,000 playing a scratch-off ticket years ago, he thought that he’d seen his biggest Lottery payday.
“I enjoy playing, so I’ve continued to buy tickets. I never, never expected to win big again, though,” he said.
The Washington County duo plan to share the Powerball prize with their family. The grocery store where the ticket was sold is Martin’s at 1729 Dual Highway in Hagerstown.
