Lucky Anne Arundel County player claims top prize on $50,000 Cash game
An Anne Arundel County man was driving home after a long day at work in the transportation field when his thoughts turned to the Maryland Lottery.
“I was heading down the road and I said, ‘I’m going to play a few numbers,’” recalled the father of one, as he sat in the Winner’s Circle at Lottery headquarters. The scratch-off fan also plays Pick 3 and Pick 4 along with Powerball and Mega Millions. He stopped at one of his favorite Lottery retailers, Rt. 3 BP in Gambrills, and went inside.
Before he could buy a Pick 3 or Pick 4 ticket, however, his gaze landed on three $20 scratch-offs. The $50,000 Cash game stood out so that’s the scratch-off he bought.
He scratched the game off in his vehicle and was on the sixth and final row when he matched the number 23 with a winning number. He revealed part of the prize beneath and saw $50.
“I scratched some more and said, ‘No!’” The excited player realized he won $50,000 and quickly looked around to see if anyone was watching. Realizing no one had seen him, the winner hid the scratch-off and went inside another store to buy holiday cards. “I was in disbelief,” he recalled.
His routine, upon arriving home, is to get out of his work clothes and boots before entering the house. “I opened the door and told my wife to come to the door,” he said. “She asked what was wrong. I said, ‘I was praying that I need a blessing,’” and then handed the winning scratch-off to her.
The elated couple plan to keep news of the big win to themselves. Our winner said he is letting his wife decide how they will spend the prize but finishing off a bathroom renovation is probably on the to-do list.
His Anne Arundel County Lottery retailer also benefits from his Lottery luck. For selling a top-prize winning scratch-off, Rt. 3 BP located at 738 State Route 3 receives a $500 bonus from the Lottery. This popular game still has 84 $50,000 top prizes and 93 $5,000 second-tier prizes remaining, along with others ranging from $20 to $500.
