A retired construction worker from Salisbury is looking forward to an even more enjoyable retirement after a scratch-off turned a routine stop at Wawa into a $200,000 win.
The winner enjoys spending time with his two best friends, visiting local casinos to play slot machines and Keno while grabbing a bite to eat.
“It’s fun,” the winner said of his enjoyment of games.
He also occasionally tries his luck with Maryland Lottery scratch-offs.
“Whenever I feel the instinct,” he said.
On the day of his big win, the retiree stopped at the Wawa at 668 South Salisbury Boulevard in Salisbury. His friends waited in the car while he went inside. He purchased and scanned his $5,000,000 LUXE ticket.
“It said I was a winner, but what did I win?” he recalled.
He took the ticket to the clerk, who confirmed the surprising news: He had won $200,000.
“Me? An old guy with no luck at all?” the winner said to himself as he began to accept the reality. He was in shock.
When he returned to the car and told his friends, they were initially just as stunned. But his two best friends shared the excitement by joining him when he claimed his $200,000 prize at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore on Aug. 10.
Now, the retired construction worker has a few plans for his unexpected windfall. He intends to pay off his vehicle and use the rest to enjoy his retirement.
After years of hard work, he said, the win gives him one more reason to enjoy the good times with the people closest to him.
The $5,000,000 LUXE scratch-off is a $50 ticket that kicked off in February with three $5 million top prizes. There are two top prizes and seven $200,000 prizes remaining.
