The Week in Winners: Mega Millions, Powerball Jackpots Grow as Players in Maryland Hit Big

Nearly $31.8 million in prizes won in the past week across the state

Powerball players across Maryland won substantial prizes in Baltimore, Dundalk, Ellicott City and Gaithersburg last week as the game’s jackpot grew to within striking distance of $1 billion. Meanwhile, a Mega Millions player in Fruitland won $20,000 as that game soared past the billion-dollar mark.

The big Powerball wins include a ticket worth $1 million purchased in Baltimore, one worth $100,000 in Gaithersburg and two worth $50,000 each that were purchased in Dundalk and Ellicott City. As of March 25, all four of those big Powerball prizes from the past week remained unclaimed. Winners have 182 days from the drawing date to claim their prizes.

The jackpot prize for the March 25 Powerball drawing is an estimated annuity value of $800 million, with an estimated cash option of $384.8 million. The jackpot grows each time no one matches all the winning numbers, and there have been 35 drawings without a jackpot winner since Jan. 1 when a player in Michigan hit for $842.4 million.

The Mega Millions jackpot for the March 26 drawing stands at an estimated annuity value of $1.1 billion, with an estimated cash value of $525.8 million. There have been 30 drawings since Dec. 8, 2023 when two players in California split a jackpot of $394 million.

This is the first time the Mega Millions and Powerball jackpots have simultaneously been at the $800 million level or higher since the games’ inceptions in 2002 and 1992, respectively.

While the massive Mega Millions and Powerball jackpots are drawing plenty of attention, six Maryland Lottery players won six-digit prizes last week playing scratch-off games in Baltimore (two), Germantown, Indian Head, Lanham and Rockville.

In all, 38 Maryland Lottery tickets worth $10,000 or more were purchased or claimed in the week ending March 24, and players won prizes totaled nearly $31.8 million in that span.

Winners of prizes larger than $25,000 must redeem their tickets at the Maryland Lottery Claims Center in Baltimore, which is open by appointment only. Prizes of up to $5,000 can be claimed at any of more than 400 Expanded Cashing Authority Program (XCAP) locations. All Maryland Lottery retailers are authorized to redeem tickets up to and including $600. More information is available on the How To Claim page of mdlottery.com.
